Cities are struggling to track their environmental impact. The current monitoring methods are a mixed bag, using different approaches that make it impossible to compare data across cities. This “paradox of choice” creates a blind spot – we can’t see the big picture of how cities are impacting nature globally. To tackle this, IUCN has developed a standardized system called the Urban Nature Indexes (UNI) that provides a clear picture of a city’s ecological performance. Flexible for various users, the UNI aims to streamline data collection and reveal the true impact cities have on our planet. With biodiversity loss accelerating and cities holding immense power to influence the crisis, measurable action towards global environmental goals is more important than ever.
